Disinfection - High costs, little benefits and new damages
Chemical and thermal disinfection, even with a temperature of 70°C, doesn't affect all legionellas (not even with UV-light) and damages the water pipes.The dead bacteria that remain in the system and other particles (like Phosphate) serve as nutrition to the surviving bacteria.The disinfection process only causes stress on the bacteria and prevents them from producing colonies. Therefore, when using the prescribed detection method, one will often receive negative test results even though legionellas are still present. After the stress dissipates, the surviving bacteria recover and begin reproducing again.
